Background and Experience

1. How did you get started as a skipper, and what drew you to sailing in Croatia?

My sailing journey began at the age of 5 when my father enrolled me in sailing school. I spent two years navigating an Optimist dinghy, but being a bit chubby, my boat often felt too slow—especially in Split’s light winds. By age 7, my father bought a 24-foot monohull. This was the late 80s, and the Adriatic was a wild, untamed sea with no charter boats in sight. Every summer, my family—parents, brother, and I—would embark on 4 to 5 weeks of sailing, exploring nearly every island along the coast. These experiences shaped my childhood and forged a deep connection to the sea. When I started high school, I earned my sailing license and began adventuring independently or with friends. After completing university in Zagreb and working as a columnist for a renowned Croatian news portal, I found myself longing for the sea. In 2015, I left my desk job, returned to Split, and obtained the certifications to become a professional skipper.

2. How many years have you been sailing in Croatia, and what are some of your most memorable experiences?

Since becoming a professional skipper in 2015, I’ve completed over 150 weeks at sea on various monohulls and catamarans, with additional sailing experiences in Greece, Italy, French Polynesia, and the Caribbean.

Among my most memorable sails was a 10-day journey through French Polynesia, exploring Bora Bora. Sailing offers a unique perspective on the world—connecting you to both nature and culture in a way that no other travel experience can.

3. Could you share the most challenging and rewarding aspects of your job as a skipper?

The most challenging aspect is adapting to the needs of the crew. As a skipper, you become everything—mother, father, son, brother, therapist, confidant, or even a drinking buddy. Navigating these dynamics requires emotional intelligence as much as technical skill.

The most rewarding part is seeing guests disembark with smiles on their faces, knowing you’ve given them memories they’ll cherish and recount for years. There’s no greater satisfaction than strengthening family bonds and creating unforgettable experiences.

Sailing in Croatia

4. What makes Croatia such a unique and popular destination for sailors?

Croatia offers an unparalleled mix of natural beauty, cultural heritage, and sailing-friendly conditions. Sheltered waters, mild weather, and a well-developed maritime infrastructure make it ideal for sailors of all skill levels.

From lush, green islands and vibrant culinary traditions to crystal-clear waters and a dynamic nightlife scene, Croatia truly has it all—without the extremes of hurricanes, massive waves, or oppressive humidity.

5. Could you describe some of the most iconic sailing routes in Croatia? Do you have a personal favorite?

There are two main approaches to exploring Croatia by sea: a longer route and a shorter, more relaxed one. The longer route includes Šolta, Hvar, Korčula, Lastovo, Mljet, and Vis, catering to those eager to explore as much as possible.

The shorter route focuses on Brač, Šolta, Hvar, and Vis, offering more time to unwind. As for my personal favorite, let’s just say a good skipper never reveals all their secrets! But trust me, the magic lies in striking the perfect balance between adventure and relaxation.

Practical Insights

7. What should first-time sailors in Croatia know about the local weather and sailing conditions?

Talk to the locals. Once you dock, don’t hesitate to approach professional skippers—they’re an invaluable source of advice. Collect their contact information for recommendations and updates. Sailing solo doesn’t mean you have to be isolated; local knowledge is priceless.

8. Can you recommend any hidden gems or less-visited islands that are worth exploring?

Lastovo is a personal favorite. It’s remote and challenging to reach, but the untouched beauty and tranquility are always worth the effort.

9. Are there any specific challenges (e.g., currents, winds, anchoring) that sailors should prepare for in Croatia?

The biggest challenge is maneuvering in tight marinas, many of which were designed decades ago when boats were much smaller. Docking in these spaces, especially with a 20-knot crosswind, can test even the most experienced skippers.

Cultural and Local Knowledge

11. Are there any festivals, events, or local customs that you recommend sailors experience?

Croatian summers are packed with spontaneous festivals. Picture this: you dock at a small village after a day on the water, only to find a traditional Fisherman’s Night in full swing. Freshly grilled seafood, local wine, live music—what more could you ask for?

12. What are some of the best local dishes or drinks you’ve enjoyed while sailing?

Croatia’s culinary delights include black cuttlefish risotto, pašticada (a slow-cooked beef dish), and peka (a traditional baked dish made with meat or seafood). For seafood lovers, don’t miss lobster pasta or mussels in buzara sauce. Pair these with a glass of local Plavac Mali or Pošip wine for the whole experience.

Advice and Tips

13. What advice would you give to someone considering hiring a skipper for their sailing trip in Croatia?

Ask yourself this: is your priority independence or diving deep into local culture? For seasoned sailors, a skipper might seem unnecessary, but remember—a good skipper is also a guide, offering insights and experiences you might otherwise miss. Find out the benefits of hiring a professional skipper.

14. How do you ensure safety and comfort for your passengers during a trip?

A thorough briefing on the first day sets the tone. Clear communication about safety protocols, expectations, and daily routines can prevent 99% of potential issues.

15. What are the most common mistakes or misconceptions you see from tourists who come to sail in Croatia?

Many underestimate the distances involved, thinking they can sail from Split to Dubrovnik and back in a day. It’s important to plan realistic itineraries to avoid disappointment.

Personal Stories

17. What’s the most breathtaking view or moment you’ve witnessed on a Croatian sailing trip?

The view from the top of Palagruža Island is unparalleled. It’s a raw, isolated beauty that’s impossible to describe fully—pure, unspoiled solitude.

18. Have you ever encountered marine wildlife while sailing here?

Absolutely! Dolphins are frequent visitors, as are sea turtles. But the most surprising encounter? Wild boars swimming between islands—10 to 15 nautical miles! That’s 5–10 hours of swimming for them.

The Future of Sailing in Croatia

19. How do you see the future of sailing tourism in Croatia evolving?

While the growing number of boats is a concern, Croatia will remain a top destination due to its unique combination of natural beauty, culture, and infrastructure. There’s simply no alternative that matches what the Adriatic offers.

20. Do you want to highlight any environmental concerns or conservation efforts related to sailing?

Pollution and habitat destruction are pressing issues, but real change requires systemic action at the government level. Individual efforts matter, but collective responsibility is key. Follow the tips for sustainable and eco-friendly sailing.
