For the curious, here are some facts about lighthouses in Croatia*:
Around 60 lighthouses on the Croatian side of the Adriatic were built during the 19th century. Adriatic lighthouses are significant because of the natural features of the Croatian coast—its nearly 6,000 km long coastline is home to as many as 1,185 islands, islets, and rocks.
-
The Highest: Veli Rat, also known as Punta Bjanka Lighthouse, was built in 1849 on the northwestern cape of Dugi Otok. It stands 42 meters high, making it the tallest lighthouse on the Adriatic. Its light has a range of 22 nautical miles (approximately 40 km). A lighthouse keeper's family has always lived at the lighthouse.
-
The Oldest: Savudrija Lighthouse in Istria, often called "the lighthouse built out of love," stands 36 meters high and was built in 1818. It is the oldest and northernmost lighthouse in Croatia. Today, a lighthouse keeper still lives there with his family.
-
The Smallest and Youngest: The Rivanjske Sestrice Lighthouse was built in 1899 on the island of Rivanj near Zadar. It is the youngest and one of the smallest lighthouses in Croatia. Due to its proximity to Zadar, it was built modestly, as it did not require a large crew. In front of the lighthouse, there is a small waterfront that serves as a shelter for sailors during bad weather or as a docking point for visitors to this beautiful island.
-
The Farthest: The Palagruža Lighthouse is located on the remote island of the same name, nearly at the center of the Adriatic Sea, making it the most distant Croatian lighthouse. It was built in 1875. The lighthouse building sits in the middle of the island at an elevation of 90 meters. Two lighthouse keepers live there year-round in alternating shifts. Its light, the most powerful of all Croatian lighthouses, is located at an altitude of 110 meters and has a visibility range of 25 nautical miles.
